The Old State Capitol , also known as the Old State House , was Kentucky's third state capitol. The plans come from the young architect Gideon Shryock. He chose the Greek Revival style as a bridge between the young Republic of Kentucky and the democratic ideals of ancient Greece. The Temple of Athena in Priene served as a model. The tympanum rests on six Ionic columns . They were made from regional limestone. In keeping with the windowless construction of Greek temples , the main facade of the Old State Capitol is also windowless. A lantern on the roof provides natural light around the vestibule , which is also noticeable with its cantilevered, two-flight staircase.
The Old State Capitol gained notoriety when on January 30, 1900, the newly elected Governor William Goebel was assassinated , whose injuries he succumbed a few days later. Today a memorial plaque in the ground at the point where Goebel fell to the ground reminds of this.
Increasingly, the building no longer met the government's requirements. In 1904 the foundation stone for the new Kentucky State Capitol was laid, which in 1910 could be handed over to its due extent. The Old State Capitol has been the seat of the Kentucky Historical Society since 1920 and was listed on March 11, 1971 as a monument on the National Register of Historic Places . On November 11 of the same year, the building was granted National Historic Landmark status . Today the Old State Capitol serves as a museum.
