Oleacinidae is the name of a family of snails from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). They are predatory forms that mainly feed on other snails. They are common in Central America and South America .

features

The housings are relatively large and spindle-shaped. The animals can still withdraw completely into the housing. The outside shows clear growth stripes. Most of the cases are brownish. The lips on the head are usually very elongated and look like a third pair of tentacles.

Occurrence and way of life

The family is common in the tropics and subtropics of Central America and South America . These snails predatorily feed on other snails. The prey is held in place with the foot and glands are then used to etch holes in the victim's housing. The prey is then eaten with the help of the radula . Other species devour smaller snails entirely or bite larger pieces from the soft body.

Systematics

The family Oleacinidae is included in the superfamily Testacelloidea. According to Bouchet and Rocroi (2005), the family is subdivided into three subfamilies Oleacininae Adams & Adams, 1855, Euglandininae Baker, 1941 and Varicellinae Baker, 1941. According to the system of Thompson (2010), however, the Euglandininae with the well-known rosy wolf snail ( Euglandina rosea ) are counted among the Spiraxidae .
