Oleksandr Oles ( Ukrainian Олександр Олесь ; * 23 November July / 5 December  1878 greg. In Bilopillja , Charkow Governorate , Russian Empire ; † July 22, 1944 in Prague , Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia ) was a representative as a Ukrainian writer and playwright of symbolism .

Oles was born as Oleksandr Ivanovytsch Kandyba (ukr. Олекса́ндр Іва́нович Канди́ба ) and published his works under the pseudonym Oleksandr Oles. He was the father of the Ukrainian poet, prehistorian and politician Oleh Olschytsch (1907–1944). Oles left his home country in 1919 and initially lived in Budapest, Vienna and Berlin. From 1923 he lived in exile in Prague in the Czech Republic and died in the German-occupied city in 1944, where he was buried in the Olschanski cemetery.
