Olfert Dapper
Olfert Dapper (born January 6, 1636 in the Jordaan district in Amsterdam , † 1689 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch physician , geographer and historian . He became known through his publications in the Jacob van Meurs publishing house .
Life
Olfert Dapper grew up with several siblings in the family of a linen weaver in the artisan district of Jordaan in Amsterdam. His father married Trijntje Heeren in 1624. They had their children baptized Lutheran. Some died early. The dates of his brother Gerrit's life are known (1627–1690). Sister Lysbeth's year of birth is given as 1623.
Olfert Dapper studied medicine at the University of Utrecht . After graduating, he returned to his hometown.
Create
Dapper dealt with the historical development of the Dutch capital, with literature on the geography of the Orient. In the same way, he brought together contemporary knowledge of Africa.
