Olive Mary Wendy Nicol, Baroness Nicol , (March 21, 1923 - January 15, 2018 ) was a British politician of the Labor and Co-operative parties .

life and career

Nicol was born on March 21, 1923 to James and Harriet Rowe-Hunter. She attended the Cahir School in Ireland . From 1942 to 1944 she was the chief administrative secretary of the Inland Revenue and Inspector of the Admiralty from 1944 to 1948.

From 1972 to 1986 she was a Justice of the Peace at the Cambridge Court of Justice ( Cambridge Bench ). She was a member of the Board of Directors ( Board ) of the Co-operative Wholesale Society 1976-1985 and President from 1972 was from 1981 to 1982 she Councilor ( Councilor ) of Cambridge City Council. In 1974 she was Deputy Mayor ( Deputy Mayor ).

Nicol was a member of the Supplementary Benefits Tribunal from 1976 to 1978. From 1978 to 1981 she was a member of the Careers Service Consultative Panel.

Membership in the House of Lords

Nicol was made a Life Peer of Baroness Nicol, of Newnham in the County of Cambridge on January 20, 1983 . She gave her inaugural address in the House of Lords on February 7, 1983.

She cited environmental policy , energy policy , forestry , environmental protection and trade as topics of political interest on the House of Lords website .

From 1983 to 1989 she was Whip of the Opposition and Baroness in Waiting and from 1995 to 2002 Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chair of Committees. Nicol was a member of Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee from 1982 to 1988 and the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) from 1998 to 2000. From 1983 to 1987 she was Whip of the Opposition and from 1987 to 1989 Opposition Deputy Chief Whip. From 1988 to 1989 she was the opposition spokeswoman for energy . From 1983 to 1992 she was the opposition spokeswoman for environmental protection issues ("Green issues"). She was chairman ( chairman ) of the All-Party Retail Group .

She was a member of the following Select Committees : from 1986 to 1991 European Communities , Science and Technology from 1990 to 1993, Europe from 1990 to 1996 and the Environment and Social Affairs Sub-Committee . Nicol also served on the Sustainable Development Committees from 1994 to 1995, Use of Animals in Scientific Procedures from 2001 to 2002, the Science and Technology Sub-Committee on Management of Nuclear Waste from 1998 to 1999, and the Ecclesiastical Committee from 1990 to 1996.

The last time she spoke up was on July 5, 2004. She last took part in a vote on June 27, 2006. Nicol was regularly present in the late 1990s, but her presence continued to decline in the years that followed. Most recently she attended a single meeting in the 2007/2008 session.

Since July 11, 2012 she was on leave of absence by a "Leave of Absence" issued by the House of Lords.

family

She was married to Alexander Douglas Ian Nicol since 1947. Together they had two sons and a daughter.

Honors

She was an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Waste Management. In 1990 she became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society .
