Gwilym Prys Prys-Davies, Baron Prys-Davies (*  8. December 1923 in Llanegryn , Gwynedd , Wales , † 28. March 2017 ) was a British politician of the Labor Party and Life Peer . He was a Labor Party candidate in the 1966 by-election in the Carmarthen constituency , in which Plaid Cymru was defeated by Labor.

life and career

Prys-Davies was born on December 8, 1923 in Llanegryn. He served in the Royal Navy from 1942 to 1946 . In 1956 he became a lawyer ( solicitor ) . From 1957 to 1987 he was a partner at Morgan Bruce and Nicholas SLRs and from 1987 to 1993 as a consultant (Consultant) operates.

From 1974 to 1978, Prys-Davies served as Special Advisor to the Secretary of State for Wales . From 1968 to 1974 he was chairman (chairman) of the Welsh Hospital Board . From 1967 to 1969 he was a member of the Welsh Council . From 1978 to 1982 he was a member of the Economic and Social Committee of the European Economic Community .

He was Opposition Spokesman (Opposition Front Bench Spokesman) for Northern Ireland from 1982 to 1993 and for Welsh Affairs (Welsh Affairs) from 1987 to 1995. From 1983 to 1987 he was responsible for health.

From 1997 to 2001, Prys-Davies was President of Swansea University . He was chairman of the NPFA (Cymru) from 1998 to 2000. From 1989 to 1995 (or 1990 to 1997) he was a member of the British-Irish Parliamentary Body .

Membership in the House of Lords

Prys-Davies was promoted to Life Peer on February 9, 1983 as Baron Prys-Davies , of Llanegryn in the County of Gwynedd . He made his inaugural address at the House of Lords on March 2, 1983.

As subjects of political concern, he cited the devolution of Wales and legislation on the Welsh language.

Prys-Davies was on several Lords Select Committees . From 1988 to 1989 he was a member of Murder and Life Imprisonment , from 1983 to 1984 Parochial Charities (Neighborhood Trusts Bill and the Small Charities Bill) and from 1995 to 1996 Relations between Central and Local Government . From 1993 to 1999 he was a member of the Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments and from 1999 to 2002 of the Select Committee on Delegated Powers and Deregulation .

In the 1980s, he spoke up on terrorism prevention, education, Northern Ireland local elections in 1985 and new tobacco products. In the 1990s, he spoke to Welsh Language Use, Education and Libraries, as well as the National Health Service . Prys-Davies spoke in the 2000s on topics such as reform of the House of Lords, bills for higher education and several times on the Public Services Ombudsman (Wales) Bill .

He last spoke up on July 19, 2008. He last took part in a vote on July 19, 2010. His presence was initially in the middle range, but subsided.

Since September 5, 2011 he was on leave of absence granted by the House of Lords .

On May 23, 2015, Pry-Davies voluntarily retired and left the House of Lords under the rules of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014.

Honors

He was an Honorary Fellow at Aberystwyth University , Swansea University , Trinity College Carmarthen and the University of Wales Institute Cardiff . 1996 it was approved by the University of Wales the honorary doctorate conferred Doctor of Laws (Hon LLD). He received this title from the University of Glamorgan in 2009 . He was an officer of the Order of Malta .
