Oliver O'Grady

Oliver O'Grady (* 1946 in Limerick ) is a suspended Catholic priest from Ireland who raped several children in California from 1973 onwards .

O'Grady was ordained in Thurles , County Tipperary in the late 1960s . In 1971 he immigrated to the United States . From 1971 to 1978 he served as a priest in St. Anne's Catholic Church in Lodi . He then changed churches and congregations more often, but stayed in California all the time.

In 1993, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison on four counts of child molestation against brothers John and James Howard . Attorney Jeff Anderson said the Howard brothers were abused multiple times by O'Grady between 1976 and 1984 when they were between three and 13 years old. Anderson also said that the Church was aware of the abuse cases between 1976 and 1984, but did nothing about it. In 1998 a civil court sentenced the Stockton diocese , where O'Grady served, to pay $ 30 million in damages. The sum was subsequently reduced to US $ 7 million. O'Grady was paroled in 2000 after seven years in prison and is residing in Ireland after being expelled from the United States.

In an affidavit posted on video in 2005, he testified that he had molested no fewer than 25 children in Northern California.

The Oscar- nominated documentary Deliver Us from Evil (2006) takes up the events of O'Grady and tries to expose the entanglement of the church. O'Grady accuses the Church of having known about the incidents, but to have protected him by transferring to other parishes. He also confirmed the suspicion that the responsible bishop Roger Michael Mahony knew of what had happened and therefore assigned him to another ward.

In December 2010, O'Grady was arrested again in Dublin for possession of child pornography . In January 2012, O'Grady was sentenced to three years imprisonment for the offense in Ireland.
