Oliver Schmidt (* 1972 in Hückelhoven - Brachelen ) is a German sports reporter and football commentator who works for ZDF .

Schmidt grew up in Erkelenz and played football for SV Brachelen in his youth. After graduating from Cusanus-Gymnasium in Erkelenz, he studied political science with the minor subjects economics and law .

In the early 1990s Schmidt worked in a local editorial office in Erkelenz as a football reporter; his focus was on the SC 09 Erkelenz. He came to ZDF in 1995 as a freelancer, where he worked from 1998 to 2004 as a permanent editor, interviewer and story maker at soccer world championships and soccer championships . Since 2010 he has been part of the ZDF commentator team at World Cup and European Championship finals and, as a representative of Béla Réthy, also comments on individual international matches of the German national soccer team . From 2012 to 2018, he also commented on games in the UEFA Champions League, alternating with Bela Réthy .

Since 2006 he has directed programs for the current sports studio and has been active as a commentator since 2007, both for game summaries and for live broadcasts . From 2010 to 2014 he was editor-in-chief of the current sports studio .

Schmidt is married and has two sons. He lives in Wiesbaden .
