Oliver Wolcott Gibbs
Oliver Wolcott Gibbs (born February 21, 1822 in New York City - † December 9, 1908 ) was an American chemist .
Life
Oliver Wolcott Gibbs performed the first electrogravimetric analysis by using the electrolytic reduction of copper and nickel ions to the corresponding metals for quantitative analysis.
Gibbs became a chemistry professor in 1848, in 1849 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1854 to the American Philosophical Society , from 1863 to 1887 he was a professor at Harvard University . In 1885 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . 1895-1900 he was President of the National Academy of Sciences , of which he was one of the founding members in 1863.
He mainly worked in the fields of analytical and inorganic chemistry.
