Olney is a city and a management unit in the District Milton Keynes in the county of Buckinghamshire , England. Olney is 24 miles from Aylesbury . In 2001 the place had 6032 inhabitants, in 2011 the number of inhabitants was 6477. The city was mentioned in 979 as Ollanege ("Ola's Island") in a document, then again in 1086 as Olnei in the Domesday Book .

Making lace is critical to Olney and its development. In the 1560s, the art of lace making came to England , and many immigrant lace makers in Buckinghamshire settled in Newport Pagnell , Buckingham and Olney in particular . In the latter, lace makers were mainly to be found in side streets along the High Street, as this area was one of the poorest areas of the city at the time. Poverty ruled the city for a long time. This only began to change when industrialization arrived and shoe factories replaced the small ironworks.

Olney is also known for its annual "Pancake Race", which has been taking place in the city for several centuries. The race takes place every year on Shrove Tuesday at 11:55 a.m. You have to run a distance of almost 380 meters (415 yards) in apron with a pan and a pancake. Only women over the age of 18 who have lived in Olney for at least three months are eligible for the race.
