The gymnastics and sports club Rüstringen Olympia Wilhelmshaven is a sports club founded in 1947 in the city of Wilhelmshaven . The association was originally named after the office equipment manufacturer Olympia , who opened a plant on site after the Second World War . The club, which these days was primarily geared towards popular sports, gained notoriety through the success of its soccer team in the early 1970s. Historically, athletes have also acquired a good reputation.

Nowadays, in addition to athletics, the TSR also does table tennis , triathlon , American football , gymnastics and sports acrobatics . The football team playing in the fourth-class Oberliga Nord operates under the name Jade Bay Buccaneers , while athletics is operated under the name LG Wilhelmshaven . The acrobats regularly achieve good placements at the Lower Saxony state championships and the north-west German championships.

Soccer

Club crest in the heyday of football

The club's football department attracted attention between 1969 and 1975 when it initially spent several seasons in the then second-rate Regionalliga Nord and even achieved some respectable placements: 15th, 6th, 8th, 12th and 7th place Years. After qualifying for the professional league combined with the Regional West and Berlin for the 2nd Bundesliga North , the TSR only two points separated from a non-relegation place at the end of the season and the club said goodbye as 17th of 20 teams in the third division. Bernd Helmschrot stood between the posts at TSR that year. The venue was the stadium on Friedenstrasse.

In 1992 TSR Olympia and SV Wilhelmshaven merged their soccer teams for economic reasons. Top football was now operated in Wilhelmshaven under the name of the SV, while the TSR withdrew its first team to the 1st district class.

In 2000, a complete merger of the football departments of TSR Olympia and SV Wilhelmshaven to form SV Olympia Wilhelmshaven, which had been approved by both clubs, failed due to the association's objection. This merger would have rehabilitated the heavily indebted SV and created a joint regional league team.

For the 2009/10 season, a large part of the football department left TSR Olympia and merged with the football department of WSSV Wilhelmshaven to form FC Olympia 09 Wilhelmshaven . Since then, no more football has been offered at the TSR.

Athletics has a long tradition at TSR Olympia that has lasted for over six decades. The successes of the marathon runners in particular received nationwide attention and recognition.

Hein Arians, who later also distinguished himself as a coach in the club, is considered to be the engine and outstanding achiever in Wilhelmshaven's marathon history. From 1958 to 1962 he succeeded time and again in bringing a successful team to the start. The TSR Olympia developed in these years with five team successes in a row to the marathon stronghold in Germany. Between 1958 and 1962 Hein Arians was four times German runner-up in the individual standings and - together with his club mate Wilhelm Gänßler - was also four times German champion in the marathon team standings with the TSR. Hans Gerdes was part of the championship team three times and Werner Lulies and H.-Dieter Simonsen were each part of the championship team. Jürgen Wedeking, German marathon champion with the TSR for the first time in 1958, later became German champion in the individual classification twice for VfL Wolfsburg and once for SC Dahlhausen and became one of the most successful marathon runners in Germany with a total of four individual titles. Marlis Wilken, who became German champion in the high jump in 1977 and was also very successful in the all-around competition, stands for the successful women in the club. Other TSR and LG athletes were able to distinguish themselves on the shorter medium and long distances as well as in the sprint and technical disciplines.
