Omerta - City of Gangsters is one of Haemimont Games developed and Kalypso Media published building simulation with turn-based game elements for Windows , macOS and the Xbox 360 . The game was released in German-speaking countries on January 31st for the Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 platforms, and the German-language version for Windows was also released on January 31st via Steam . The English version was released a day later on February 1st in the rest of Europe, while the American version was released a little later, on February 13th, 2013. The macOS version was released on August 2, 2013.

action

The title covers the period of the 1920s - the Roaring Twenties - at the time of Prohibition in the United States . The action itself takes place in Atlantic City , New Jersey, whereby the organized crime , which was pushed underground due to the alcohol ban , and the resulting mafia-like structures in America represent the main feature of the character.

At a time when criminal gangs rule the city and a few have made it all the way to the top with illegal games of chance, high-proof spirits and dubious machinations, the action of the player, who is stranded in this melting pot of illegality, begins. The player takes on the role of the Mediterranean immigrant named Freddie Tannino , born in a small village in Sicily , who only just arrived in Atlantic City after crossing from Italy . He has to find his way around the rugged new environment and work step by step in the mafia world. It is now up to him to bring a small part of the business under his control and thereby make his way of the American dream - the "American way of life" - a reality.

Trivia

Omerta, the game title, refers to the mafia-like confidentiality ( code of honor ) called " Omertà " , which obliges members of a mafia and similar criminal organizations to keep silent about outsiders.

With the official retail release of the boxed and download versions of the game, the title was also released on the GoG.com platform in parallel . This version has no copy protection or any other DRM restrictions.

Gameplay

Omerta - City of Gangsters is similar from the plant older gangster - strategy games like Gangsters: Organized Crime and Gangsters 2 where the player tries as a gang leader with the help of a bunch of thugs in competition with rival gangs parts to bring a town under his control. The player works his way up the hierarchy via small rip-offs at the beginning and thus creates his own syndicate as the game progresses . By buying vacant commercial buildings and shops, the player has the opportunity to expand by opening his own bars and hidden breweries. Likewise, localities such as whisper bars can be bought up from the competition. It is also possible to purchase apartments legally to secure income. Ultimately, the purchase of warehouses provides enough space to store any dodgy things like spirits and weapons.

As the game progresses, the character recruits his own companions , whose various qualities can be used in different ways and thus manifests his own gang , with the help of which he conquers other areas of other gangster bosses and thus consolidates his criminal organization. In turn-based confrontations with other comrades-in-arms, the player can gradually expand his sphere of influence and thus push other sponsors out of the competition in order to ultimately become the undisputed patron of Atlantic City .

In addition to the multiplayer mode, in which the player can also act cooperatively, the game offers a sandbox mode . This enables free exploration of the game world in order to expand freely in an endless game on four different maps - which deal with the respective districts of Atlantic City - independently of the single player campaign .

Historical basis

The renowned "Traymore Hotel" in Atlantic City, around 1930

The game offers a freely explorable, three-dimensional game world from a bird's eye view . According to the publisher Kalypso Media, the game world represents an almost historically correct replica of the American city of Atlantic City at that time.

Real classic buildings and locations such as the renowned Traymore Hotel , the Absecon Lighthouse or the Atlantic City Jail-house are included as well as the Eastern Promenade as well as Illinois Avenue and North Carolina Avenue , which ends directly on the beach . Apart from these real buildings, the remaining buildings - which are kept in Art Deco - appear quite similar, seem to consist of only a few types.

reception

Omerta - City of Gangsters received moderate to mediocre criticism from the press. Above all, the game earned recognition for its successful implementation of the theme at the time of Prohibition. The coherent locations of the plot at that time also received a lot of positive mention. However, the meager and undemanding state of the plot as well as its lackluster implementation was a bitter defeat and a lot of potential of the game - of which the title actually has a lot - was given away.

The Windows version achieved a rating of 54% on Metacritic .

Reviews

PCGamer gave the Windows version a rating of 78%, praised the game mechanics and the AI, and even compared the game's combat elements with X-COM or Jagged Alliance . The plot had to back off and was described as much too shallow and simple, even too smooth. The atmospheric music, on the other hand, is a brilliant mixture of the jazz of the time, ragtime and klezmer - and its lack of naming is a scandal.

Not nearly as extraordinary and profound as it could have been, Omerta is still a destination worth visiting. "

- Tim Stone : PCGamer.com

The editors of Metro GameCentral found it difficult to give more than 30 percentage points due to the state of the game. Initially delighted with a game that finally revisited the Mafiosi scenario, the turn-based battles in the tested PC version seemed simply awkward. The background music is initially moving and the graphic strategy elements are impressive - at least at first glance. In the end "Omerta" is disappointing, not only because of the badly kept promise, but also because the game is too easy even in advanced missions.

You can see the basis of a good game, but Omerta does almost everything wrong. From the shallow game mechanics to the bland, characterless gangster atmosphere. " "

- Roger Hargreaves : GameCentral | Metro.co.uk

In Hooked Gamers one was excited about the potential and gave the title of the PC version a score of 8.4 out of 10 points. The game is described as “different” , but the turn-based combat elements are brief but satisfactory. The single player campaign offers some new, albeit small, game elements. Unfortunately, graphically overdrawn, the opponents would not be a challenge even in the later course of the game. In summary, after the simple introduction, the game is only too easy to play and, after more demanding, it leaves the player alone too quickly.

“ What shook me the most was the potential. Omerta is a good game, if it succeeds, a great game. [...] " "

- Sergio Brinkhuis : Hooked Gamers
