Omorate (also Omo Rati or Rate ) is a town on the Omo River in the extreme southwest of Ethiopia . It is the main town of the woreda Kuraz in the Debub Omo zone of the region of the southern nations, nationalities and peoples and the largest town in the Dassanetch area .

The place is about 25 km away from the border with Kenya and also from Lake Turkana . A road connects Omorate with Turmi . At the time of the Derg regime there was a North Korean- supported cotton-growing project near Omorate , but it failed.

According to the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia, Omorate had 3,363 inhabitants in 2005. According to the 1994 census, of 1,857 inhabitants 31.88% were Amharen , 20.73% Dassanetch, 10.98% Oromo , 9.96% Wolaytta , 7% Gamo, 6.25% Gofa, 3.98% Konso and 9, 32% members of other ethnic groups. 42.97% spoke Amharic as their mother tongue, 19.22% Dassanetch , 8.56% Wolaytta , 7.22% Oromo , 5.87% Gamo , 4.95% Gofa, 3.23% Konso and 7.97% others Languages.
