causes

Omphalitis usually occurs in newborns during the first few weeks of life and is traumatic and infectious . Risk factors are a low birth weight, previous punctures of the umbilical cord, and premature or delayed rupture of the umbilical cord. More rarely, omphalitis can also be triggered by a navel piercing .

Umbilical infections are usually mixed bacterial infections. Staphylococcus aureus , A streptococci , Escherichia coli , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Proteus mirabilis , but also anaerobes such as Bacteroides fragilis and Clostridium perfringens are more frequently involved.

Symptoms

In the initial stage, a purulent discharge from the navel and reddening and swelling of the surrounding tissue are typical .

Complications

Without treatment, complications and life-threatening conditions due to ascending infections are relatively common. Peritonitis , liver abscesses , portal vein thrombosis , endocarditis and sepsis are associated with fever and fatigue. Local complications such as necrosis of the abdominal muscles , abscesses around the umbilical region and necrotizing fasciitis also have a fairly high mortality rate .

treatment

Antibiotics , rarely surgical measures, are used for treatment .
