Dr. Dawn Holliday works as a forensic doctor in Los Angeles . During a guest lecture in Hawaii , her former lover, Naval Officer Tom Haber, is killed. She quits her job in Los Angeles and moves to Honolulu . With her forensic investigations, she forms a counterpoint to the twice divorced police officer Mack Wolfe, who works with more traditional police methods. Nevertheless, both manage to solve crimes together, and a relationship develops between the two in the course of the series.
Other characters in the series include Wolfe's friend, the local police chief Captain Dave Herzog, as well as forensic staff Nui Shaw and Kimo.
