The Doktorsee is an artificial swimming and leisure lake near the town of Rinteln in the Weser Uplands .
Location and description
The lake is located west of the old town of Rinteln and lies south (left) of the Weser on the state border between Lower Saxony (town of Rinteln in the district of Schaumburg ) and North Rhine-Westphalia (town of Porta Westfalica ) in the district of Minden-Lübbecke . The lake actually consists of two lakes that are separated by a narrow headland and have no connection with each other. The smaller, western lake has direct access to the Weser.
The lake was created in the years up to 1960 through the mining of gravel and sand. After the dismantling stopped, the lake was used as a bathing lake. An extensive leisure and recreation area with a campsite and appropriate infrastructure was created on the bank. The leisure area (lake and camping area) has an area of 152 hectares, half of which is water. There is a range of events around the lake during the season, in particular the national summer festival with fireworks at the Doktorsee in flames at the end of July . A historical small caravan, which is exhibited in the Rinteln Museum in the "Eulenburg", commemorates the beginnings of camping tourism .
The name goes back to the meadows and pastures originally located here. These so-called "doctor pastures" were used as pastures for cattle by the professors at Rinteln University .
