Onelio Jorge Cardoso

Onelio Jorge Cardoso (born May 11, 1914 in Calabazar de Sagua , Cuba , † May 29, 1986 in Havana ) was a Cuban writer and journalist .

Life

Cardoso studied literature in Santa Clara on his second education path , but was unable to complete his studies for lack of money. In 1936 he won his first literary prize. He worked as a country school teacher, street vendor, drug salesman and for twelve years as a text writer for radio and television in Cuba.

In 1945 he received a literary prize for his story " Die Köhler " ( Los carboneros ). Cardoso moved to Havana in 1948 . He was the editor-in-chief of a film magazine. In 1952 he received the National Peace Prize for his story " Altes Eisen " ( Hierro Viejo ).

From 1961 to 1966, Cardoso was a member of the UNEAC (Cuban Writers and Artists Association) literature advisory board . He wrote numerous articles for Cuban magazines and worked on films.

In 1976 he became cultural attaché at the Cuban Embassy in Peru and then President of the UNEAC Literature Section.

His achievements as a narrator are outstanding. His stories are about simple people and their problems. With his very own narrative style, which is only reminiscent of Hemingway in its structural structure , he succeeds in working out philosophical transcendence from everyday situations. Cardoso's stories have been translated into 12 languages.
