Onita Boone (* 1965 in Newburgh , New York ) is an American singer in the genres of gospel, jazz, rock and soul.

Life

Onita Boone grew up as the second youngest of six siblings in Newburgh, about one hundred miles north of New York City , where she learned the basics of her singing skills in the church choir of her home ward. Her talent was recognized early on and she sang her first solos as a child, and her first recordings were made. At the age of 16 she moved to New York City, where she earned a reputation as a singer and performer in various music and musical productions.

In the course of various engagements as an actress and background singer, she has traveled to all continents and has appeared on stage with many world-famous artists, such as B. Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle, Mariah Carey, Take Six, Elton John, Faith No More, George Michael and Billy Preston.

In 1997 one of her international engagements took her to Hamburg , where she met her current husband, the trombonist Uli Plettendorff. Since then she has moved to Germany, where she has become an integral part of the musical scene. So she had performances, tours and studio productions with artists such as Nils Landgren, Randy Brecker and the WDR Big Band, Udo Jürgens, Sarah Connor and Samy DeLuxe.

In 2003 and 2005 she was able to put together her own program with a symphony orchestra and her jazz trio (consisting of: drummer and arranger Jörg Achim Keller, pianist Olaf Polziehn and bassist Ingo Senst) and perform it several times with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra under the direction of GMD Steven Sloane . Her affinity for the great American jazz singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Patti Austin could also be clearly heard here .

In 2007 she began to pass on her experience to schoolchildren and since then has accompanied singers, actors and musical performers during their productions as a vocal coach. This activity led her in 2011 to apply for the first broadcast of the TV show The Winner Is ... which was broadcast on SAT.1 . Here she made it straight to the final. In the last vocal duel of this last round, she convinced not only with her vocal qualities but also with strong nerves when she turned down a certain amount of money of 100,000 euros. Instead, she decided with the words “no guts, no glory” (“if you don't dare, you won't win”) for the audience rating, which was all or nothing, in the form of a check for one million euros - and won.

In 2012 she was under contract with Universal Music , where she released her album Onita , produced by the Hanoverian music producer Mousse T. , which contains several cover versions of well-known songs as well as seven original compositions.
