Only Time Will Tell is a jazz album by the Mike Longo Trio starring Paul West and Lewis Nash . The recordings were made on September 28, 2016 in Paramus, New Jersey and were released on March 31, 2017 on the Consolidated Artists label. The album was Longo's twentieth for the CAP label and his 26th album since his debut as a band leader in 1962. It was the last recordings by the pianist, who died in March 2020.

background

Longo is accompanied on Only Time Will Tell by bassist Paul West and drummer Lewis Nash. West had completed two stations with Dizzy Gillespie - in the 1950s with the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and again in the 1960s with his quintet, which also included Mike Longo. Lewis Nash had also worked with Gillespie several times in the following years.

The CD contains two compositions by Dizzy Gillespie; the fast “Wheatleigh Hall” was first recorded by the trumpeter in 1957 on an album with Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt . The gently swinging “Just a Thought”, which Gillespie wrote as a piano number in the 1960s, had never been recorded before. Longo's other selection of melodies include jazz standards such as Thelonious Monk's “Nutty” and “Brilliant Corners”, Oscar Pettiford's “Bohemia After Dark” and the tracks “ Memories of You ” and “ Exactly Like You ” from the Great American Songbook and “Ruby” "(From the 1952 King Vidor film Wildes Blut ), plus four original compositions by Mike Longo, including the title track, the bossa nova- influenced" Stepping Up "and" Conflict of Interest ", first dedicated to Dizzy Gillespie in 1994 Quintet album I Miss You John released. According to Longo, the title track was inspired by a documentary about US President Lyndon B. Johnson . "I started feeling sorry for him and went to the piano and wrote it," says Longo. Regarding the meaning of the title, he said “that after time things can look different than when you originally perceived them.” <Refname = "aaj" />

reception

According to Bob Doerschuk, who gave the album four stars on Down Beat , Mike Longo draws from two sources on the strong album Only Time Will Tell ; “One is his awe of the classical repertoire - its familiarity and craftsmanship. The other is his history as a modernist, particularly in his affiliation with Dizzy Gillespie and his affection for Thelonious Monk. Throughout the album, the differences between these two sources fade and the similarities persist. ”With the Monk melodies, they approach Monk's idiosyncrasies combined with features of their own style. This works well enough for "Brilliant Corners". According to the author, the Longo originals seem to “grow from individual seeds. 'Conflict Of Interest' is an ascending left figure on the piano. On the title track, a ballad, it is the melody that Longo conceived beautifully and played tenderly. ”Doerschuk counts the first and last track among the highlights of the album. "To start with, Longo created a clever arrangement for the show number 'Tomorrow' and the very slow 'Memories of You'".

Stephen Cerra (Jazz Profiles) wrote: “Mike's approach to the jazz piano trio is heavily influenced by his background as a composer and arranger for his own big band. He applies the same structured themes to his trio work so that it all comes from something: there are introductions, interludes and intervals; Piano, bass and drum functions; Up-tempo, medium swing and ballad song choices - a whole host of arranger concepts that keep the music constantly changing and interesting. And then there's the unmatched musicality of Mike, Paul West and Lewis Nash; All three are extremely successful on their instruments, but experienced and selfless enough to listen to each other and make exciting and stimulating music together.
