Paul West (bassist)

Paul E. West (born January 28, 1934 in New York City ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass ).

Live and act

West attended NYC High School of Music and Art and Wagner College Staten Island, where he received his bachelor's degree. Initially active as a violinist in the field of classical music, he led the Paul West Symphonic-Pop Orchestra and Chorus in the early 1950s . From 1954 he worked mainly in the field of modern jazz ; u. a. as a member of the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and the Lee Morgan / Wynton Kelly septet. From 1955 he was involved in recordings a. a. Involved by Ray Charles , Les Jazz Modes , Lester Young , Urbie Green and Dinah Washington . In the decades that followed, he also worked with Les Spann , Ram Ramirez , Johnny Lytle , Lisle Atkinson , Jimmy Ponder and Carmen McRae . From 1969 to 1973 he taught in the music education project Jazzmobile , then until 2000 at the Henry Street Settlement Music School. In his later years he played a. a. with Carol Sloane , Junior Mance and in the Mike Longo Trio ( Only Time Will Tell , 2017). In the field of jazz he was involved in 81 recording sessions between 1955 and 2016.

The bassist should not be confused with the pianist of the same name .
