Paul Knothe

Paul Knothe (* 1897 in Waldorf near Dresden , † 1988 in Halbs ) was a German painter of Expressionism , Cubism and Futurism .

Life

From 1911 to 1914 Paul Knothe did an apprenticeship as a decorative painter . From 1914 to 1916 Knothe studied at the Dresden Art Academy . In 1918 he studied at the Dresden School of Applied Arts under Paul Rößler , as well as Kutschmann and Alexander Baranowsky . In 1919 Knothe moved to the Bauhaus Dessau under Paul Klee . The inspiration of Klees and Kandinsky's elementary design theory is reflected in the pictures of Knothes. Knothe also worked in the Stenzel studio in Dresden.

Since 1930 Paul Knothe worked as a freelancer in Dresden. In 1933 painting was banned and all pictures were expropriated and all paintings were destroyed. In 1934 he moved to Cologne. In 1938 he retrained to become a technical draftsman in Düsseldorf. From 1946 he devoted himself entirely to painting. Paul Knothe died in 1988 in the Westerwald.

The artistic oeuvre ranged from expressionism to cubism to futurism. In the twenties he wrote considerable works about the "painter as a spatial artist". Paul Knothe had the habit of adding different signatures to his pictures and watercolors. a. with “Knothe”, “PaulKa” and later with “Paul Kaan”.
