Alexander Baranowsky (born August 30, 1874 in Riga , † May 3, 1941 in Dresden ) was a German painter, set designer, commercial artist and professor at the Dresden School of Applied Arts .

Baranowsky began his artistic training as a decorative painter in Riga. From 1896 to 1899 he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule and from 1904 to 1909 at the Royal Art Academy in Dresden .

After graduating, he worked in Dresden with interior design and stage decorations. In addition, he designed textiles, posters and book covers, also created wall paintings, especially in churches in Wurzen and Grimma as well as in the synagogue in Görlitz and in the princely castle of Gera .

In 1913 he was employed as a teacher for ornament studies at the Dresden School of Applied Arts, and later took over the specialist class for decorative and theater painting. In 1918 he received the title of professor and took over the class for textile art.

Baranowsky also worked for the "German workshops for home art interest group". He became an employee of the architect Rudolf Bitzan .

His students included Siegfried Donndorf (1900–1957), Rudolf Fleischer (1915–1984), Willy Kriegel (1901–1966), Erna Lincke (1899–1986) and Willy Müller-Lückendorf (1905–1969).

He is buried in the Trinity cemetery in Dresden.
