economy

The economy is dominated by agriculture . In Oraovica / Rahovica there is a reservoir, which is used for irrigation of the fields in the valley as well as for fishing and also as a recreation area.

The economic collapse of Yugoslavia at the beginning of the 1990s, the subsequent Kosovo war in 1999 and the armed conflict in Macedonia in 2001 made the economic situation of the region, which had always been economically underdeveloped, considerably worse. The economy is mainly agricultural , the military and customs are also major employers. The main factors are the cultivation of wheat, tobacco, maize and melons, and forestry, especially to the west of the city are large forests. The service sector, especially retail and gastronomy, is another important industry in the region. Industrial structures are the exception among companies. The construction industry is of minor importance. Over 60 percent of the population have no paid work, but are largely self-sufficient through their house, land, fields and farm ( subsistence farming ). In addition, many families receive financial support from the Albanians and Serbs living in the diaspora. Another source of income is smuggling across the nearby borders. The younger residents study in Niš , Pristina , Tetovo or Tirana and mostly move away from Opština. Since 2002, Albanians have again been allowed to provide police officers in Preševo.
