Opelt is an impact crater in the southwest of the front of the moon in the north of the Mare Nubium plain , northeast of the Bullialdus crater and north of Gould .
The crater is almost completely flooded by the lavas of the Mare and only a remnant of the crater rim is visible.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Opelt . In November 2012, the son Otto Moritz Opelt (1829–1912) was added according to the original name of Johann Friedrich Julius Schmidt .
