Operation Blue Jay is an American documentary film in the The Big Picture series . The short film covers the facility at Thule Air Base in Greenland . It was nominated for the Best Documentary Short Film category at the Academy Awards in 1954 .

The film shows the establishment of Thule Air Base from the training of engineers to the opening of the military airfield in Avanersuaq , Greenland. The original code name of the secret project was Operation Blue Jay .
