Optiver was founded in 1986 by today's Chairman Johann Kaemingk in Amsterdam. After sales of shares to investors, the business area was expanded to Frankfurt am Main , Paris and London in 1990 . In the further course of the expansion, the still existing office in Sydney was opened in 1996 and the previously issued shares were bought back by the end of 1998. By 2003, the New York City branch , which opened in 1999 , was completely relocated to Chicago. In 2009 the company made a profit of 6.3 million euros. In 2014 the company made a profit of 267.7 million euros.

In 2008 the company was reported by the Nymex Securities and Exchange Commission for manipulating the price of oil.
