Opuntia atrispina is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet atrispina means '(Latin atrispinus) black prickly'.

description

Opuntia atrispina has low shrubby growth, is spread out and forms groups of up to 2 meters in diameter. Sometimes a trunk up to two feet in diameter is formed. The light green, almost circular shoot sections are 10 to 15 centimeters long. Their glochids, which are yellow at first , later turn brownish. Areoles at the base of the shoot sections are often thornless. Some of the two to four flattened thorns are spread out. They are dark brown and have a black base.

The yellow flowers turn orange with age. The fruits are reddish purple in color.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22 or 66.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia atrispina is distributed in the United States in the south of the state of Texas and in the Mexican state of Coahuila at altitudes of 450 to 600 meters.

It was first described in 1910 by David Griffiths .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
