Opuntia auberi is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the director of the Botanical Garden in Havana Pedro Alejandro Auber e Fondniare .
description
Opuntia auberi grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of 3 to 8 meters and more. The branches are at right angles from the trunk. The cylindrical trunk is hornless and has brownish glochids . The blue-green to gray-green, wide and massive shoot sections are up to 30 centimeters long. The two to three thorns , which can sometimes be missing, are white and have a darker tip.
The dark pink flowers are up to 9 inches long. Nothing is known about the fruit .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia auberi is common in the Mexican states of Chiapas , Guerrero and Oaxaca as well as in Cuba .
It was first described in 1840 by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer . A nomenclature synonym is Nopalea auberi (Pfeiff.) Salm-Dyck (1850).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
