Opuntia aurantiaca is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet aurantiaca means '(Latin aurantiacus) orange-colored'.

description

Opuntia aurantiaca grows shrubby, is richly branched and reaches heights of growth of up to 30 centimeters. The spread out, creeping to slightly upright branches create dense groups. The dark green to almost black, linear to club-shaped shoot sections are 5 to 15 centimeters long, 1 to 1.5 centimeters wide and 1 to 1.5 centimeters thick. The large areoles are grayish white, the short glochids light yellow. The two to three (rarely up to six) awl, straight thorns are brownish to yellowish and 1 to 3 centimeters long. The upper ones are more powerful, the lower ones occasionally thin and bristle-like.

The deep yellow to orange-yellow flowers are up to 4 inches long. The pear-shaped, somewhat purple-colored fruits are heavily thorny and can reach a length of up to 3 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia aurantiaca is common in Uruguay , the Argentine provinces of Entre Ríos and Buenos Aires and possibly Paraguay at altitudes of 100 to 500 meters.

The first description was in 1833 by John Lindley . A nomenclature synonym is Cactus aurantiacus (Gillies ex Lindl.) Gillies (1839).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
