Opuntia austrina is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Opuntia austrina has a shrubby growth, creeping or ascending, irregularly branched branches and reaches heights of up to 1 meter. The roots are bulbous. The deep to light green, thin, more or less circular to elliptical shoot sections are 5 to 10 centimeters long. The 4 to 7 millimeters long, ascending, strong leaf rudiments located on them are subpulate, green and tinged with purple. The protruding areoles have yellow or brown glochids . The one or two slender, needle-like, yellow to red thorns turn whitish with age. They reach a length of 3 to 5.5 centimeters.
The light yellow flowers reach a diameter of 6 to 7 centimeters. The narrow obovate fruits are purple and 2.5 to 3.5 inches long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia austrina is distributed in the southeastern United States in the states of Texas , Alabama , Mississippi, and Florida .
The first description was in 1903 by John Kunkel Small . Nomenclatory synonyms are Opuntia compressa var. Austrina (Small) LDBenson (1969, incorrect name, ICBN article 11.4) and Opuntia humifusa var. Austrina (Small) (1975).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
