Opuntia bella is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet bella means '(Latin bellus) beautiful, pretty, cute'.

description

Opuntia bella grows shrubby and forms dense thickets with heights of up to 1.5 meters. The cloudy, dark green, elongated shoot sections are wavy at their edges. They are 10 to 16 inches long. The leaf rudiments on them are up to 2.5 millimeters long. The slightly protruding, small, brown felted areoles have brown glochids . The two to six unequal, needle-like thorns are white and can reach a length of up to 2 centimeters.

The sulfur-yellow flowers turn orange-yellow with age. They can reach a length of up to 5 centimeters. The small fruits are greenish yellow.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia bella is common in western Colombia .

The first description was in 1919 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose .
