Opuntia bonplandii is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the French naturalist Aimé Bonpland .

description

Opuntia bonplandii grows shrubby to tree-shaped, is open, loosely branched and reaches heights of up to 4 meters. The cloudy green, egg-shaped or almost egg-shaped shoot sections are 20 to 30 centimeters long. The two to seven needle-like, light yellow thorns are 1 to 1.5 inches long and soon fall off.

The orange-colored flowers reach a length of up to 6 centimeters and the same diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia bonplandii is widespread in Ecuador in the Azuay province .

It was first described as Cactus bonplandii in 1823 by Karl Sigismund Kunth . Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber placed the species in the genus Opuntia in 1898 .
