Opuntia cognata is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet cognata means '(Latin cognatus) blood related, similar'.

description

Opuntia cognata has a shrubby growth and is semi-creeping to slightly ascending. The thin shoot sections are 7 to 15 inches long and 3 to 7 inches wide. The areoles are outlined in red, the glochids are reddish brown. The one to three straight, awl, protruding thorns are brownish and reach a length of 2 to 5 centimeters.

The orange-yellow flowers are up to 5 centimeters long. The red fruits are spherical.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia cognata is common in Paraguay Alto Paraguay in the Puerto Casado district .

The first description as Platyopuntia cognata was published in 1979 by Friedrich Ritter . Pierre Josef Braun and Eddie Esteves Pereira put the species in 1995 in the genus Opuntia .
