Opuntia elata is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet elata means '(Latin elatus) proud, sublime'.

description

Opuntia elata grows as a shrub with more or less upright branches and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. The deep green, elongated to obovate shoot sections are 5 to 25 centimeters long, up to 15 centimeters wide and up to 1.5 centimeters thick. The small leaf rudiments quickly become obsolete. The large white areoles are far apart. The late appearing glochids are persistent. The one to three, often missing, straight, stiff, whitish to gray thorns are often only present on older shoot sections. They are 3 to 5 inches long.

The orange flowers have a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The club-shaped fruits are more or less purple and up to 6 centimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia elata is distributed in Uruguay , Paraguay , northeast Argentina and possibly southern Brazil and southeast Bolivia at low altitudes of up to 500 meters.

The first description was in 1834 by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
