Opuntia elizondoana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Mexican botanist Jorge L. Elizondo .
description
Opuntia elizondoana grows shrubby, branching from the base and forms groups with heights of 30 to 65 centimeters. The greenish to yellowish to olive green, bare, elliptical to elongated shoot sections are 10 to 20 centimeters long and 4.5 to 5.5 centimeters wide. The small yellowish leaf rudiments have a reddish tip. The oval whitish-gray areoles are tinged with purple. The glochids are yellowish. The two to four - or occasionally up to seven - somewhat spreading, whitish thorns have a yellowish tip. They are 1 to 2 inches long.
The yellow, reddish tinged flowers have a length of up to 5 centimeters. The obovate fruits are green to salmon-colored and 3 to 3.5 centimeters long.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia elizondoana is common in the Mexican state of Querétaro .
The first description was in 1994 by Emiliano Sánchez M. and José Luis Villaseñor .
