Opuntia ellisiana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the botanist J. Coswell Ellis .

description

Opuntia ellisiana has a shrubby growth with loosely branched, ascending, spreading branches. The glaucous blue-green, obovate to ovoid shoot sections are 20 to 24 centimeters long. The long awl leaf rudiments are bent back. The slightly raised, small white areoles turn dark with age. The inconspicuous glochids are yellow. There are no thorns .

The deep yellow flowers turn orange or reddish. They have a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. The pear-shaped fruits are reddish purple in color.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia ellisiana is found in the United States in the southern state of Texas .

It was first described in 1910 by David Griffiths . A nomenclature synonym is Opuntia lindheimeri var. Ellisiana (Griffiths) K. Hammer (1976).
