Opuntia feroacantha is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet feroacantha (lat. Feroacanthus) means 'wild bristles'.

description

Opuntia feroacantha grows tall tree-like to shrubby and forms groups with heights of up to 3 meters. A conspicuous thorny trunk is often formed. The bare, elongated to egg-shaped shoot sections are wedge-shaped at their base. They are six to eight inches long. The circular, large areoles are brown and are 2 to 4 centimeters apart. The glochids are yellowish. The one to two (rarely three to four) thorns are cloudy white with a darker base. Some of the thorns are very short, the rest are up to three inches long.

The yellow flowers have a diameter of up to 4 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia feroacantha is common in the Mexican states of Sinaloa and Nayarit .

The first description was in 1926 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose .

Opuntia feroacantha is not well known.
