Opuntia fuliginosa is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet fuliginosa (Latin fuliginosus) means 'soot-shiny'.

description

Opuntia fuliginosa grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of up to 4 meters. A conspicuous woody trunk is formed. The shiny yellow-green, rounded to obovate shoot sections are of different sizes. Usually they are 15 to 20 centimeters long. The awkward leaf rudiments are up to 12 millimeters long. The elliptical areoles are gray and are 3 to 4 centimeters apart. The different glochids are yellowish to darker in color and up to 1 centimeter long. The two to eight translucent thorns are dirty white to brownish or gray. The lower of them are curved, the middle ones are often flattened and twisted. The thorns are up to 4 inches long.

The yellow flowers turn reddish with age. They have a length of up to 2.5 centimeters and a diameter of up to 4 centimeters. The red, obovate to spindle-shaped fruits are covered with numerous glochids.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia fuliginosa is common in the Mexican states of Colima , Guerrero , Jalisco, and Michoacán .

The first description was in 1908 by David Griffiths .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
