Opuntia hondurensis is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet hondurensis comes from Latin and means 'from Honduras'.
description
Opuntia hondurensis grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of up to 9 meters. A clear trunk of up to 30 centimeters in diameter is formed. The light green, egg-shaped to elongated obovate shoot sections are 13 to 22 inches long and up to 7 inches wide. The approximately twelve unequal, thin, slightly flattened, spreading thorns are reddish brown and 2 to 2.5 centimeters long.
Nothing is known about the flowers and fruits .
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia hondurensis is common in Honduras .
It was first described in 1941 by Paul Carpenter Standley . A nomenclature synonym is Nopalea hondurensis (Standl.) Rebman (2002).
