description

Opuntia karwinskiana grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of 2 to 7 meters. A conspicuously thorned trunk is formed. The light green, somewhat glauken , elongated shoot sections are 15 to 30 inches long and 5.5 to 8 inches wide. The areoles are far apart. The numerous glochids are yellow. There are one to three thorns at the beginning , later they are more numerous. The thorns are reddish, turn yellowish or whitish over time, and are up to 4 centimeters long.

Stamens and stylus protrude from the red, barely opening and more or less tubular flowers . They reach a length of 11 to 12 centimeters. The elongated red fruits are up to 3 inches long. They are not thorned, but covered with conspicuous clusters of glochids.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia karwinskiana is common in Mexico from Sonora to Oaxaca along the Pacific coast.

The first description was in 1850 by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck . A nomenclatory synonym is Nopalea karwinskiana (Salm-Dyck) K.Schum. (1898).
