Opuntia lagunae is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet lagunae means 'from the location in the Sierra de la Laguna in Mexico'.

description

Opuntia lagunae grows shrubby with somewhat upright twigs appearing at the base and reaches heights of up to 1.5 meters. The glaucous- green, obovate to circular shoot sections are up to 15 centimeters long and just as wide. The small areoles are round. The long glochids are yellow and are located on the upper parts of the areoles. The usually five needle-like, protruding or downwardly directed thorns are whitish and up to 3 centimeters long.

The yellow flowers reach a diameter of up to 7 centimeters. The obovate, dark, somewhat purple-red fruits are up to 7 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia lagunae is common in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur at altitudes of 500 to 600 meters.

It was first described in 1932 by Helia Bravo Hollis .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
