history

The Sparkasse in Neustadt was founded in 1835. Before that, Neustadt had no significant banking system of its own (banking transactions were mainly carried out via Nuremberg, Hof and Bayreuth). After 1905 the municipal savings bank was accused by the council of municipal representatives to promote trade, commerce and new buildings only in securities instead of (through mortgages), a fundamental reorganization was decided in 1906. From 1906, the year of its reform, the Sparkasse continued to develop successfully, primarily through its mortgage and credit business. As a savings bank administrator from January 10, 1907, Leonhard Bankel (first mayor from April 25, 1921) had rendered outstanding services to the development of the municipal savings bank. In the course of time the Neustädter Sparkasse had different names: Stadtsparkasse, Bezirks- und Stadtsparkasse, Kreis- und Stadtsparkasse, Sparkasse. In 1933 their turnover had increased to 14,943,000 and the security reserve to 121,000 marks. As the "prototype of the Franconian savings bank", the Neustädter Sparkasse received a new building in 1935/1936.
