Opuntia lasiacantha is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet lasiacantha means' (Greek lasios) densely hairy; densely covered with hair-like, bristly spines'. Spanish common names are "Nopal" and "Nopal de Cerro".

Opuntia lasiacantha grows shrubby or tree-shaped with upright twigs mostly appearing from the base and reaches heights of 0.5 to 4 meters. The green, bald, not humped, obovate to elliptical shoot sections are 18 to 30 inches long and 12.5 to 17 inches wide. The small areoles are 2 to 3 centimeters apart. The striking yellow glochids are 2 to 4 millimeters long. The one to three slightly awl to needle-like, protruding to backwards, straight, whitish or yellow thorns turn gray with age.

The yellow to orange flowers reach a length of 5 to 7 centimeters. The wrongly conical, greenish yellow, reddish tinged fruits are edible. They are set with glochids and thorns, 3.5 to 4.5 inches long and have a diameter of 2 to 3 inches.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia lasiacantha is widespread in Mexico at altitudes of 1400 to 2600 meters.

It was first described in 1837 by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer . A nomenclature synonym is Opuntia megacantha var. Lasiacantha (Pfeiff.) A. Berger (1929).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
