Opuntia lilae is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Venezuelan teacher and human rights activist Lila Trujillo (1913–1987).
description
Opuntia lilae grows shrubby with a few upright branches and reaches heights of up to 1.2 meters. The papillate, not humped, broadly elliptical to elliptical shoot sections are tapered at their base and have a blunt tip. Older shoot sections are almost cylindrical. The shoot sections are up to 18 centimeters long, up to 10 centimeters wide and up to 1 centimeter thick. The round areoles are white. The yellowish white, up to 3 millimeters long glochids become light yellow over time. Some of the two to five whitish to yellowish-brown thorns are bent back. The thorns are 1 to 1.2 inches long.
The yellow to reddish yellow flowers reach a length of up to 3 centimeters and a diameter of 1.2 to 1.6 centimeters. The almost spherical to inverted cone-shaped fruits are pink-red.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia lilae is common in Venezuela in the state of Sucre .
It was first described in 1990 by Baltazar Trujillo and Marisela Ponce .
