Opuntia neochrysacantha is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet neochrysacantha means '(lat. Neochrysacanthus) new golden yellow prickly'.

description

Opuntia neochrysacantha grows shrubby with sometimes creeping, but mostly upright branches and reaches heights of growth of up to 80 centimeters. The yellowish green, bare, finely dotted, oval shoot sections are 20 to 25 centimeters long and 13 to 16 centimeters wide. The areoles, which are located near the tips of the shoots, are on raised bumps and are 3 to 3.5 centimeters apart. They have short, initially cream-colored, later gray to blackish glochids , which can sometimes be missing. From all areoles arise four to eight different needle-like to awl, flexible, thin, spreading to slightly protruding yellowish thorns up to 2.5 centimeters long.

The flowers are yellow with a reddish tinge and reach a length of up to 7 centimeters. Nothing is known about the fruit .

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia neochrysacantha is common in the Mexican states of Zacatecas , Aguascalientes and San Luis Potosí .

The first description by Helia Bravo Hollis was published in 1974.
