Opuntia pampeana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet pampeana means '(lat. Pampeanus) native to the steppe (pampas)'.
description
Opuntia pampeana forms cushions with branches consisting of three to five shoot sections. The glaucous , elongated to lanceolate to ellipsoidal shoot sections are 12 to 15 centimeters long, 8 to 9 centimeters wide and up to 2.5 centimeters thick. The elongated areoles are whitish and are located on light bumps. The one to three needle-like, whitish thorns are 2 to 4 inches long.
The numerous yellow to slightly pink flowers appear along the edges of the shoot sections and reach a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters. The almost spherical, red fruits have a length and a diameter of up to 2 centimeters.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia pampeana is common in the Argentine provinces of Santiago del Estero , Santa Fe , La Pampa and Buenos Aires at altitudes of up to 500 meters.
The first description by Carlos Luis Spegazzini was published in 1896. A nomenclature synonym is Opuntia sulphurea var. Pampeana (Speg.) Backeb. (1958).
