Opuntia penicilligera is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet penicilligera means 'carrying a brush'.
description
Opuntia penicilligera grows low and more or less creeping. The circular to obovate shoot sections are 10 to 12 centimeters long, 7 to 10 centimeters wide and 6 to 8 millimeters thick. Most areoles have no thorns , only the upper ones have a few thorns . The reddish brown glochids stand together in large, conspicuous clusters. The one to three grayish white thorns are arched. The individual central spines reach a length of 1 to 5 centimeters. The shorter and weaker radial spines are occasionally absent.
The wheel-shaped flowers are sulfur to lemon yellow. Your pericarpel is long and cylindrical. The club-shaped fruits are light green with a reddish tinge. They reach a diameter of 1.8 centimeters and a length of up to 4.5 centimeters.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia penicilligera distributed in the Argentine provinces of Buenos Aires , La Pampa , Neuquén and Río Negro at altitudes of up to 1000 meters.
The first description by Carlos Luis Spegazzini was published in 1902.
