The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sorrento-Castellammare di Stabia ( lat. : Archidioecesis whirring Tina Castri Maris o Stabiensis , ital. : Arcidiocesi di Sorrento-Castellammare di Stabia ) is in Italy situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Sorrento .

history

The diocese of Sorrento was established in the 5th century . In 968 it was established by Pope John XIII. raised to the archbishopric.

The dioceses of Massa Lubrense , Vico Equense and Capri were dissolved on June 27, 1818 by Pope Pius VII with the Apostolic Constitution De ulteriori and their territory was annexed to the Archdiocese of Sorrento.

The Archdiocese of Sorrento lost its metropolitan status on April 30, 1979 through the Apostolic Constitution Quamquam Ecclesia and was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Naples as a suffragan . On September 30, 1986, the Archdiocese of Sorrento was annexed to the Archdiocese of Castellammare di Stabia by the Congregation for the Bishops with the decree Instantibus votis .
