Opuntia pinkavae is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the American botanist Donald John Pinkava (* 1933).

description

Opuntia pinkavae grows shrubby with outstretched to ascending branches and reaches heights of 10 to 25 centimeters. The narrow to broad egg-shaped, flat and firmly connected shoot sections are glabrous or slightly downy. They are 6.5 to 15 inches long and 3 to 11 inches wide. The areoles , which are 1.5 to 2 centimeters apart , have conspicuous, dense glochids 2 to 4 millimeters long on the upper part . The 1 to 4 yellowish gray to whitish gray spines arise from the upper areoles. They are directed downwards to upright and 3.5 to 7 inches long. Sometimes there are even smaller thorns.

The magenta to pink flowers are 4.5 to 7.5 inches long. The dry fruits reach a diameter of 2 to 2.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia pinkavae is common in northern Arizona and southern Utah in the United States at altitudes of 1,370 to 1,560 meters. The first description was published in 1997 by Bruce Dale Parfitt .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
