Opuntia pittieri is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Opuntia pittieri initially grows shrubby, later it becomes tree-shaped and reaches heights of up to 5 meters. A conspicuous thorny trunk is formed. The green, narrow, elongated shoot sections are 25 to 50 centimeters long and have subtle leaf rudiments with a slightly purple tip. The large areoles are arranged on elevations and are 2 to 3 centimeters apart. The sparse glochids develop late. The three to six needle-like, slightly spreading, white thorns are up to 2.5 centimeters long.

The deep orange flowers turn reddish. Nothing is known about the fruit .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia pittieri distributed in Colombia in the west of the Cordilleras .

The first description by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1919.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data. The future development of the populations is unknown.
